Park Hotel Sonnenhof
★★★★☆
Boutique Hotel
Vaduz, Liechtenstein
A family-run Vaduz retreat above the Rhine Valley, with 29 rooms, an Enzo Enea garden, Marée dining, and an intimate spring-water spa.
About the hotel
Set on a wooded rise above Vaduz, Park Hotel Sonnenhof looks across the Rhine Valley towards the Swiss Alps, with Vaduz Castle appearing through the surrounding landscape. Despite its peaceful position beside the castle forest, the hotel remains close enough to reach the museums, cathedral and pedestrian centre of Liechtenstein's capital on foot.
The Sonnenhof has been shaped by the Real family for more than six decades. Jutta and Emil Real acquired what was then a small pension in the early 1960s, gradually developing it into one of Liechtenstein's most distinctive hotels. It has been a member of Relais & Châteaux since 1979, while the second generation, led by Hubertus Real, continues the family's deliberately personal approach to hospitality.
With only 29 rooms and suites, the property retains an intimate scale. Accommodation ranges from single and Deluxe rooms to panoramic categories and individually conceived Boutique Junior Suites, with many opening onto balconies or terraces overlooking the mountains, gardens or Rhine Valley. Interiors vary considerably between categories, favouring warm materials and individual character over a uniform design language.
The gardens are an equally important part of the experience. Landscape architect Enzo Enea reworked the established park around mature trees, creating a sequence of lawns, planted terraces and quiet viewpoints without erasing its older character. Inside, the wellness area centres on an indoor pool filled with mountain spring water, a Finnish sauna and infrared cabin, while Restaurant Marée brings Hubertus Real's regional and nature-led cooking to a dining room currently recognised with 16 Gault Millau points.
Today, Park Hotel Sonnenhof is particularly well suited to couples, gastronomic travellers, hikers and visitors who want to experience Liechtenstein from a quieter base without leaving Vaduz behind. Its small scale, family ownership, established gardens and proximity to both the mountains and the capital give it the atmosphere of a private Alpine retreat rather than a conventional city hotel.
