About the hotel

Located in Jätkäsaari, a redeveloped harbour district southwest of central Helsinki, Hotel AX sits close to the Baltic waterfront while remaining around 10 minutes from the city centre by tram. The Välimerenkatu stop is almost directly outside, while Ruoholahti, West Harbour, and several cultural venues can be reached on foot, giving the hotel a distinctly urban setting away from Helsinki's more traditional hotel districts.

Opened in 2022, AX was conceived not simply as a place displaying art, but as an art experience in its own right. Its name refers to "Art Experience", and the concept was developed in collaboration with prominent Finnish contemporary artists. Works appear throughout the guestrooms, public areas, and even the exterior, while changing exhibitions and cultural programming allow the collection to evolve over time.

The seven-storey building was designed by architect Ari Ahonen of SARC Architects, with artist, designer, and sculptor Stefan Lindfors directing the interiors. Across its 173 rooms, bold graphics, sculptural pieces, murals, colour, and Finnish design replace the restrained Nordic minimalism found in many Helsinki hotels. Seven Art Exhibit King rooms go further, with individual Finnish artists given creative freedom to turn each room into a distinct work of art, while the larger Corner Studio introduces panoramic windows and separate living and sleeping spaces.

Art continues into the social spaces. AX Restaurant hosts breakfast and selected Saturday brunches, where an Art Table gives guests materials to create their own work, while the bar centres on cocktails and evening gatherings. A guided House Tour explores the building's architecture, concept, design, and collection, and the AX Club programme brings exhibitions, workshops, and live music into the hotel throughout the year.

Today, Hotel AX is particularly well suited to design-conscious travellers, couples, creative city-break visitors, and guests interested in contemporary Finnish culture. It offers a very different interpretation of Helsinki hospitality, using art as part of the actual stay rather than decoration, while its position in Jätkäsaari provides quick access to both central Helsinki and the city's working waterfront. The property's design credentials were recognised when it was named Finland's Leading Design Hotel at the 2025 World Travel Awards.

Creator experience

“Hotel AX felt like experiencing Helsinki through art. I loved how creativity was woven into every corner of the hotel, with bold interiors and thoughtful details giving the entire stay its own personality. After exploring the city, returning to such an inspiring yet comfortable space made it easy to slow down and recharge. It was a refreshing stay that captured Helsinki’s creative spirit in a way that felt both playful and distinctly Finnish.”
