Set inside the fortified hilltop village of Marvão, Marvão Hotel e Museu occupies Rua do Castelo, only a few steps from the medieval fortress. Its position places guests directly among the whitewashed houses, granite lanes and defensive walls of one of the Alto Alentejo's most distinctive historic settlements, with the mountains of the Serra de São Mamede extending beyond the village.

The hotel opened officially in March 2026 following the rehabilitation of the historic Edifício da Janela Manuelina, which had stood vacant for more than two decades. Rather than treating the building simply as accommodation, the project was conceived around the relationship between hospitality, local history and Marvão's centuries-old role as a Portuguese frontier stronghold.

Accommodation is deliberately limited to 12 rooms across five categories, including Classic Comfort, Accessible Classic Comfort, Mountain View, Superior Family and the Talhas Suite. The restoration retains elements such as the Manueline window and exposed stone while introducing regional granite, chestnut wood, hydraulic lime, Alentejo wool and local decorative details into contemporary interiors. Selected rooms add mountain views or private terraces, while the largest suite occupies 44 m².

Its defining feature is the integration of the Rua do Castelo Museum and the exhibition "Da Pedra à Pólvora", which explores Marvão's military architecture, weaponry and defensive history through a private collection. The cultural concept is complemented by Guarita Restaurant, where regional olive oil, cheeses, cured meats, herbs, vegetables and local meats are interpreted through contemporary techniques, alongside a programme of outdoor and cultural experiences across the surrounding landscape.

Today, Marvão Hotel e Museu is particularly well suited to couples, families, cultural travellers, walkers and guests interested in the history and landscapes of inland Portugal. Its scale remains intimate, while accessible accommodation, an electric arrival shuttle and the ability to explore almost the entire walled village on foot make the property an unusually integrated base for experiencing Marvão.
