InterContinental Marseille Hotel Dieu
★★★★★
Luxury Hotel
Marseille, France
A landmark palace hotel overlooking Marseille's Vieux Port, combining historic architecture, Mediterranean dining, and Spa by Clarins.
About the hotel
Set above Marseille's Vieux Port in the historic Le Panier district, InterContinental Marseille Hotel Dieu occupies one of the city's most recognisable landmarks. Its elevated position brings panoramic views towards Notre-Dame de la Garde, while the Vieux Port, La Major Cathedral, MuCEM, and the narrow streets of Marseille's oldest neighbourhood are all within walking distance.
The property's history reaches back to 1593, when the Hôtel-Dieu was created from the merger of two medieval hospitals. The present complex was extended from 1753 to plans by Jacques Hardouin-Mansart de Sagonne and inaugurated by Napoleon III in 1866. Its historic façades, monumental staircases, and architectural details were later protected as historic monuments, while Jean-Philippe Nuel led the interior design of its transformation into a contemporary luxury hotel.
The hotel comprises 194 rooms and suites, including 179 rooms and 15 suites, with 72 accommodations overlooking the Vieux Port and 33 featuring private terraces. Classic and Premium rooms are joined by Junior, Prestige, and Presidential Suites, with interiors drawing on Marseille's mineral tones and combining contemporary furnishings with the scale and character of the historic building.
Dining and wellness are central to the experience. Les Fenêtres serves contemporary Mediterranean and Provençal-inspired cuisine alongside a panoramic terrace, while Capian Bar pairs creative cocktails with views across the Vieux Port. Spa by Clarins adds a heated indoor pool, sauna, steam facilities, hydrotherapy, beauty treatments, and a fitness centre inspired by the traditional fountains and washhouses of Provence.
Today, InterContinental Marseille Hotel Dieu is particularly well suited to couples, luxury travellers, cultural explorers, and wellness seekers looking for a historic five-star stay that combines Mediterranean views, refined dining, spa experiences, and direct access to the cultural heart of Marseille.
